Alan is an A-V rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, evidencing the highest national peer rating for legal ability and ethical standards. He has a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Kansas; a Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University School of Law; and a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Alan is admitted to practice in the State of Kansas and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, U.S. Court of Claims and the U.S. Tax Court. He is a member of the Topeka Bar Association (TBA) and the Kansas Bar Association (KBA). Prior to entering private practice, Alan served as General Counsel for the Kansas Department of Revenue (1979-1983).

Alan has committed considerable time to the service of the legal profession. He served three four-year terms on the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 3rd Judicial District. He has been on the Shawnee County Family Law Guidelines Committee for many years, and was Chairman of the TBA’s Family Law Committee for more than 10 years. He is currently Chairman of the Bench and Bar Committee. Alan is a past President of the TBA, and he previously served as Chairman of the TBA’s Professional Ethics and Grievance Committee. He is a trained mediator and has been a presenter at numerous continuing legal education seminars. Alan served as Chairman of the KBA's Fee Dispute Resolution Committee for several years. Both the TBA and KBA have recognized Alan for his service to the legal profession. The TBA awarded him its Pro Bono Award on two, separate occasions, and the KBA presented Alan with its Pro Bono Award in 2004 and, again, in 2008. In 2001, Alan was the recipient of TBA’s Professionalism Award. In 2019, Alan Alderson received the Warren S. Shaw Distinguished Service Award from the Topeka Bar Association.
